Mike Southerland for Brazos County Commissioner 3 "I lead, follow or show the way!"
My Governing Principles:
1. Equal Respect and Consideration: I firmly believe in treating all residents, businesses, and students within our county with the same level of respect and consideration. No one should be favored or marginalized based on their background or circumstances.
2. Vision of Unity: My lifelong vision for our entire county is one of unity, where we unite to collaboratively tackle challenges for the greater good of our community.
3. Scientific Approach: When faced with any situation, I adopt a scientific approach rather than viewing it as a conflict. This means carefully examining all perspectives involved and making decisions based on the best ideas and solutions that are inclusive of everyone. After all this is exactly the method that has been used to make our Country prosper to such a success. We have in our county Tamu an organization that has solved problems all over the world much more complicated than we face here locally. If we ask them to be involved they can help speed up the process and provide solutions that have been verified. However it is very important the the experts not override the people but compliments and enforces the citizens ideas.
4. Collective Problem-Solving: I view governance as a collective experiment in problem-solving. We should work together to achieve common goals and address challenges. By incorporating ideas from across the county, we arrive at better-informed solutions that are tailored to the specific issue.
5. Preventing Future Conflicts: Inclusive decision-making not only results in more satisfactory solutions but also prevents future conflicts and discontent. When government listens in a considerate manner and takes action based on citizen input, it becomes more effective in serving the community's needs.
6. Transparency and Accountability: A prime example of these principles in action is the case of the medians being placed around the county. It's important to note that the responsibility lies not solely with external entities like TEXTDOT but also with local governing bodies, such as the City of Bryan, which funded and had total design control over the project. This means that our hard-earned money was used without consulting citizens about the project's impact or their preferences. Additionally, it appears that the project failed to consider the operational challenges it posed to our essential services, such as the police and fire departments. This highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in decision-making processes to avoid such situations in the future.
